My name is Jacob, a husband to a wine-blogger wife, father to two bouncy-boy toddlers, and I'm the owner/author of My Personal Finance Journey. By day, I am a scientist working in bio-pharmaceutical development. Personal finance has been my hobby since 2007 when I started teaching myself through books (that finance B.S. degree didn't teach me much!). Learning how to save, adopt a frugal mindset, and invest my own money soundly has allowed me to have a savings rate > 50%, increase my net worth by > 20 times, grow my career, and always do what I love. Check out the About Me page to learn more!
As you can see, the layout of the site looks a little different today.
The reason?
I finally set aside all of my excuses and have moved My Personal Finance Journey from Blogger (where I’ve been for 3+ years) to WordPress Self Hosted. I’m using the Genesis Framework with the News Child Theme and very much like it so far!
Anyhow, this is just a quick post to humbly request that you bare with me for a few days while I get the kinks worked out on the new hosting platform. After that, I expect to be back in full force with a more reader-friendly platform that gives all of us better functionality.
How about you all? What blogging platform do you use?
Hi folks! My name is Jacob. I am the owner and operator of My Personal Finance Journey. I started this blog in January of 2010 and have enjoyed the journey ever since. Since finishing up graduate school in Virginia in 2014, I have been working in biopharmaceutical development in Colorado. You can read more about me and this site hereโ. Please contact me if you have any questions!
Thanks for stopping by Michael. Glad you like the new look. I wanted to have a cleaner look, but not completely change the entire site feel.
I think it might be too soon to tell on the SEO right now since it’s only been a week. However, the good thing is that I think I was able to make the transition without losing too many of my links or having any downtime. Site looks great! I have been using Genesis for years and love it. Youโre going to be really happy with the switch. If you need any quick tips, shoot me an email!
Jacob, you’ll want to go into you style.css file. That’s on the left side of your dashboard under appearance. Then search for “content” and you’ll see a piece of CSS code for your font-size. You are currently at 13px. Bump that up or down however many (probably 1-2 PX) px you want to change the size. Hope that helps! Zack recently posted…Stop Comparing Your Blog to Others
Thanks for sharing how to do that Zack, good reference!
I was actually wanting to have (if it’s possible) the ability to have multiple fonts in a post as I am generating/writing it. Is that possible? Or, is the font set on a site-wide basis with Genesis? Jacob A Irwin recently posted…Why the Lowest Cost States Arenโt Always the Best Places to Retire

Thanks for reading Debt Blag! Yeah I had done A TON of manual manipulations to Blogger to customize it to my needs. I probably should have just switched a long time ago! Jacob A Irwin recently posted…I Have FINALLY Moved the Journey to WordPress Self Hosted!
Congratz Jacob. The theme is simple and looking cool ๐ I am still stucked in blogger, will do the transition to wordpress soon. Irfan recently posted…Stock Market Investing Myths
Glad to hear you’re thinking about it Ifran! How many posts do you have? One thing I’ve learned is that if you can do the switch earlier, it’s definitely better! Jacob A Irwin recently posted…I Have FINALLY Moved the Journey to WordPress Self Hosted!
Congrats on the switch! The site looks good. I just moved over to self-hosted wordpress about a month ago, and after a rough couple of days it’s worked out great.
I’m using Weaver II. It was pretty easy to setup, but my site design leaves a TON to be desired. That’s definitely on my list of things to figure out someday. When someday will come? That’s a good question.
Also, I saw your question to Pauline, and figured I’d let you know that I get no spam with Disqus. I know people have mixed feelings about it, but it’s been great for me. Matt Becker recently posted…Is a Coffee Habit Comparable to a Debt Habit?
Thanks for sharing about the spam Matt. I had Disqus a while back, and found it a little cumbersome. I’m actually doing pretty well now that I just added the little box at the bottom that says “check here if you have a pulse :)” haah Jacob A Irwin recently posted…I Have FINALLY Moved the Journey to WordPress Self Hosted!
The new wordpress looks great! Has it made a difference from an SEO perspective?

Thanks Zack! One question I did have was – how do you change the font size in posts? Do you need a plugin for that?

I’m surprised you were able to stick it out. I went two months on blogspot before the limited widget support, and the forced integration with Google+ really got to me and convinced me to head to WordPress.org

Thanks Pauline! It’s amazing how many spam comments I’m getting with WordPress compared to when I used Intense Debate.
What plugin do you recommend to control some that? Akismet?
