Hello and Welcome!
My name is Jacob, a husband to a wine-blogger wife, father to two bouncy-boy toddlers, and I'm the owner/author of My Personal Finance Journey. By day, I am a scientist working in bio-pharmaceutical development. Personal finance has been my hobby since 2007 when I started teaching myself through books (that finance B.S. degree didn't teach me much!). Learning how to save, adopt a frugal mindset, and invest my own money soundly has allowed me to have a savings rate > 50%, increase my net worth by > 20 times, grow my career, and always do what I love. Along with signifying a new beginning, the time around Christmas and New Year’s each year represents a very special, almost sacred, occasion for me. It is a time when I put my normal life on hold and make the “pilgrimage” to my home-land of Arkansas to relax with my family for 1-2 weeks.
On this trip, aside from relaxing and having a good time with my family, I make sure to set aside time to tune out the normal distractions in everyday life – computers, laptops, cell phones (sometimes at the risk of annoying the girlfriend in not responding to her messages – oops!) – and reflect on the year that has just passed. I think about my accomplishments, my progress on my life goals, and how both of these things relate to what I want to achieve. These periods of deep thought often occur while I am sitting around the fireplace at my parents house (see picture below for an example of me relaxing with my cat, Cream).
| Pondering my progress on 2011 financial goals with my cat, Cream. He leaves the thinking up to me … I think.. |
And, since I am lucky enough to be quite a finance nerd, what usually materializes out of these reflection periods is a good list of financial goals for the coming year.ย
However, I can’t start listing out new financial goals for 2012 (keep an eye out for that post soon!) before summarizing my progress on my 2011 ones first!
I’ve gotten pretty behind on these financial goal updates with the year-end craziness (the last one I gave was on October 18th!).ย As such, this post/update will serve to reflect new progress that has been made in the November-December 2011ย time-frame. Enjoy! I look forward to hearing your comments, thoughts, and progress on your own goals.
To quickly review, back in January of 2011, I laid out my short term, mid-term, and long term goals for the 2011 year.ย I do this once every year as part of my goal to create what author David Bach calls a Purpose Focused Financial Plan. The goal of this system is to employ money in your life in a way that matches your life values and dreams.ย You can read more about my journey to create this system at the following links –ย Creating a Purpose Focused Financial Planย &ย My Personal Finance Journey’s Investment Strategy.
Overall, I’ve been very lucky in the regard that my progress in 2011, for the most part, met or exceeded the expectations I originally laid out at the beginning of the year.ย
Short Term (< 1 year) Goals:
Mid-Term (3-5 years out) Goals:
Long-Term (>5 years out) Goals:
How about you all? How have the months of November and December been for achieving your goals? What are your next milestones? Have you set financial goals for 2012 yet?ย

First of all — I guarantee your cat, Cream, doesn't leave the thinking up to you. Cream (like all cats) is probably plotting how to conquer the world …
Secondly — $1000 for labor/installation of a washer/dryer unit?????? That's highway robbery! You can do that yourself in, like, 10 minutes …. If they say that “removal of the old appliance” is part of their service, remember: you can get that for free by posting an ad on Craigslist that says “free washer/dryer, you pick up.”

hehe – Cats do look like they are plotting things often don't they?!
I would agree with you about the highway robbery for installation of the washer/dryer unit, if the water/electrical hookups were already installed right and they just had to hook up the unit?
However, in my condo, it is on the second floor, and there are currently no hookups in the closet for water or electricity. So, they'd have to do some “light construction and drilling” work! haha

Congratulations Jacob. You are really making headway.
If you want a vacation home in the mountains you should come to Canada. There are some beautiful places on the west coast.
Cream is so cute. He reminds me of a cat my mom had growing up called “mickey”.
Thanks for reading Miss T! You've always been a great support to keep me motivated!

Congratulations on your goals. I'm still in the process of getting out of debt, and will repay the last of it (student loans) in 7 months. After that, I'm going to beef up a 6 month emergency fund.
I do enjoy posts like these with specific numbers and details of what others are doing.

Thanks for reading John!
This is actually a fascinating funds prioritization question that you bring up…..ie should people pay down their lower interest (student) debt first or accumulate a complete emergency fund first?
What do you think on this issue? I'd be curious to hear your take!
