Hello and Welcome!
My name is Jacob, a husband to a wine-blogger wife, father to two bouncy-boy toddlers, and I'm the owner/author of My Personal Finance Journey. By day, I am a scientist working in bio-pharmaceutical development. Personal finance has been my hobby since 2007 when I started teaching myself through books (that finance B.S. degree didn't teach me much!). Learning how to save, adopt a frugal mindset, and invest my own money soundly has allowed me to have a savings rate > 50%, increase my net worth by > 20 times, grow my career, and always do what I love. Recently, I was exposed to an interesting new online personal finance savings and life goals realization tool, called MagicNumber.com. And today, I wanted to share a my experiences in trying it out with you all.
Certain parts of MagicNumber.com are free to use, and other portions are not. For example, you can generate your Magic Number savings goal and enter your other general life goals in to the system for free.
However, in order to use the goal achievement breakdown and tracking tool shown in the last picture above, there is either a monthly or yearly fee, as described below:
Overall, Magic Number is a fun and easy-to-use online tool (everything is a very visually intuitive) to help an individual 1) determine how much money will be needed to achieve the lifestyle of their dreams and 2) to realize other general core life values goals through continuous monitoring and tracking of interim action steps.
As such, Magic Number if well-suited for people that have specific goals they want to achieve, but often find that they arrive at the end of the year without having made significant progress since they got busy with everyday life.
How about you all? Have you ever heard of or tried out MagicNumber.com? If so, what did you think of it?
If not, how do you track your overall life goals and how frequently do you review your progress?
Share your experiences by commenting below!
Important Note: This review was sponsored by MagicNumber.com. However, the opinions and perspectives represent my honest review of the product. Thanks for reading – Jacob

Great idea! It sounds like a product a lot of Americans can use. The Department of Labor says that less than half of us have calculated how much money we'll need in retirement. Well, you can't accomplish a goal if you don't even know what that goal is.

What a great concept! Determining your magic number would be an effective way to keep your mind on the future so you can make good decisions now. As someone in my late 20’s, I always forget that I need to think more about my future. I forget I’m no longer in my early 20’s and usually think have all the time in the world to get prepared. I’m going to follow the advice in this post so I can hold myself accountable to good planning for the years ahead!
You make a good point Shannon. While I have done one or two posts looking at how much I'll need to retire, I haven't thought a whole lot about that recently. Mainly, I think this is due to the fact that I feel pretty comfortable with the amount that I am saving, so I just figure that whatever I'm putting away will be 'enough.' But, it would probably be a lot better to have a concrete number in mind.
